1166 Avenue of the Americas
New York, New York
The second floor at 1166 Avenue of the Americas was transformed from offices into a corporate cafeteria. Program elements included a new mezzanine and mechanical platform within the second-floor volume and a new staircase from the cafeteria to the ground-floor lobby.
An added challenge involved a prohibition against placing structural reinforcements or mechanical equipment beneath the existing second-floor slab. A second structural slab was built to create a new cavity for mechanical conduits between the slabs.
Other structural components included support for folding partitions, chandeliers, and suspended audio and visual equipment.
